Nikon has announced a new, extreme wide-angle zoom: NIKKOR Z 14-24mm F2.8 S. Thanks to the large maximum aperture, this lens is particularly suitable for available-light photography, (indoor) sports and night shots.

The Nikkor Z 14-24 mm F2.8 S completes the range of the three F2.8 lenses for Nikon Z. Together with the Nikkor Z 70-200 F2.8 VR S and the Nikkor Z 24-70 mm F2.8 S, the user can work at F2.8 over the entire range from 14 to 200 mm.

BUILD

According to Nikon, the NIKKOR Z 14-24 mm F2.8 S lens was designed for unmatched optical excellence and maximum usability. The optical design has four ED lens elements that help control chromatic aberrations and capture fine details with consistent accuracy – a major advantage for interior and architectural photography.

The design is supposed to guarantee high sharpness from edge to edge, and minimal distortion. In combination with the quite large Nikon Z lens mount, this should ensure exceptional performance that can withstand the comparison with lenses with fixed focal length. Vignetting at the edges is effectively prevented, even when shooting with a wide-open aperture. In addition, light spots, ghosts and coma are suppressed, even in bright backlight, thanks to the Nano Crystal Coat (N) and the anti-reflective ARNEO Coat.

The autofocus is smooth and silent with a stepper motor and, according to Nikon, shows no focus breathing or focus shift during zooming. The minimum focusing distance is 28 cm.

FAMILIAR design

The NIKKOR Z 14-24 mm does not differ much from the other S-Line lenses in terms of design. It has a wide zoom ring, a focus ring and a customizable control ring that allows certain camera settings to be changed quickly. There is also an EL display panel and a customizable hotkey. Fluorocoating on the front and the weather-resistant seal around all moving parts ensure that the lens can also be used in less favorable weather conditions. The aluminum alloy housing reduces weight and increases durability.

It is remarkable that the front lens element is almost flat and not spherical, as with many 14-24mm lenses. As a result, a filter with screw thread (filter size 112mm) can be mounted on the included extra lens cap (HB-97). That makes it easy to attach a Neutral Density (ND) filter, or the new Neutral Color NC Filter 112 mm or Circular Polarizing Filter II 112 mm. The lens also includes a filter holder for trimmable filter gels at the rear.
